When the armies of Rome first entered what would become Great Britain, they found an unusual dog that pursued its prey relentlessly, even into the earth. They named this dog a terrier (in Latin, terra = earth, ier = occupation or profession). That dog was the ancient ancestor of the 27 terrier breeds recognized by the AKC today.
Using centuries old illustrations and drawings and antiquated books, we follow the development of 15 terrier breeds (Airedale, American Staffordshire, Bedlington, Boston, Bull, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Irish, Jack Russell, Scottish, Sealyham, Skye, Smooth Fox, West Highland, and Wire Fox).
184 vintage photos, many dating to the earliest days of photography, offer a rare vision of the terriers who were then, as now, our best friends.
A must-have book and the perfect gift for anyone who has ever been owned by a terrier.
